Introduction to Filming
ACTV Video Youth Group Day 3 | 18/11/15
Today, teens from all over East and West Jerusalem came to the YMCA for another round of ACTV! The focus for today’s activities was on filming documentary-style interviews.
After going round the circle to check in on how everyone was doing, we watched the opening sequence to the movie, HOT FUZZ.
We then shared our thoughts on how the sequence is built, starting with off screen sound building up, then a long shot as the hero approaches from a distance and then a quick succession of fast cuts.
Everyone agreed that this was a great way to build up tension and create interest in the movie, giving lots of information about the hero in a short space of time.
Next, were given a quick introduction to the video cameras, and then we split into groups and found different places to film in the building. Using some interesting interview questions, like, “What is your first memory?”. Everyone had a lot of fun filming interviews and learning more about each other.
It was a great way to learn about filming while making new friends.
Next week we will take the footage and start learning how to edit.
The ACTV Video Youth program has now entered it’s 4th year, bringing together teens from all over East and West Jerusalem to learn how to direct, film and edit their own amazing movies, sharing experiences and creating new narratives together.
The group is facilitated by Khaled Rishek and Asaf Shahar of the YMCA Youth Department
