Qualities of Leadership

Qualities of Leadership – We each chose one or more leadership cards showing political, spiritual and cultural leaders and discussed what qualities a leader should have.

Today’s session with the Jerusalem International YMCA’s youth leadership group began in both a relaxed and enthusiastic atmosphere. The youth arrived eager to get to work, and we started by making a delicious salad together.
We enjoyed listening to some fun music while chopping vegetables and chatting or playing foosball or pool in the lounge area.

The energy in the room was light and happy.

After going around the circle and checking in, we got right to it: we talked about what qualities of leadership constitutes a good leader. Asaf and Khaled, (The group’s facilitators) presented the group with examples of different leaders, handing out leadership cards, showing political, spiritual and cultural leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, John Lenon, Gamal Abdel Nasser, Angelina Jolie, Mark Twain and many more. We then each chose one or more cards and discussed what we each feel are important qualities of leadership. Everybody took markers in hand and wrote on a big piece of paper the traits they think matter most for leaders.

Qualities of Leadership

We each chose a card showing a different leader, like John Lennon or Angela Merkel. Then we wrote down on a big sheet in the middle of a circle qualities leaders should have.

Qualities of Leadership

Acceptance, patience, strength, compassion, courage, kindness, passion, peace, fair, faith, intelligence, humility…

Qualities of Leadership

Self confidence, humility, love…

When we discussed this further, the question of how much power a leader should hold became an interesting talking point for the group, as well as whether or not it is ever acceptable for a leader to act cruelly making unethical decisions. Some of the group continued the discussion well into the break (over bowls of tasty, homemade salad!).

Qualities of Leadership

After the break, we continued to prepare for the tours of the YMCA building we will be giving in the next few weeks, as part of Hamshushalyim and the December month of holidays festival at the JIY. Asaf and Khaled asked the group to think about what qualities a good speaker or tour guide needs and to find a personal point of interest to connect to when giving the tours. Each participant received a packet of information on the building to take home and review.

Here’s what some of our youth had to say:Tala: I have enjoyed learning more about the YMCA building the past couple weeks, but the nicest thing has been getting to know everyone better. I did not know the Jewish kids very well before starting this program, and it has been good getting to talk to them more.

Youseff: The qualities of leadership I wrote down were “revolutionary” and “courageous.”
